The Imperio Pentecostes celebration on June 8, 2025, in Rua Nova was a vibrant example of the deep traditions on São Miguel. It’s a key event in the Azorean community, and almost every town has its own “Império” or shrine dedicated to the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost, a Christian holiday celebrated 49 days after Easter, is a time of incredible festivity here. The celebrations honor the Crown of the Holy Spirit, often with the release of doves as a symbol of peace and freedom. An “Império” is a small, ornate chapel or building dedicated to the Holy Spirit.

These events are a true feast for the senses, typically lasting anywhere from three to seven days. They include parades, lively music, and spectacular firework displays. A central part of the tradition is the sharing of food with the community, an auction to raise funds, and lots of socializing. It’s remarkable that a small town like Ribeirinha, with a population of only around 2,500 people, hosts eight different Império celebrations throughout the summer.
