This stunning crater lake, nestled high in the Água de Pau Massif stratovolcano, is one of the true natural wonders of the Azores. And guess what? It’s just an easy 11 km drive from your doorstep!
A Lake Born of Fire
Lagoa do Fogo sits at the island’s highest altitude, a breathtaking 575 meters above sea level. Despite its calm, clear waters today, this lagoon is steeped in dramatic history. Its nickname, “Lake of Fire,” speaks to its violent birth. The last known eruption in 1563 was fierce, blanketing the island in ash before the volcano’s crater collapsed to form the serene lake we see now. It’s this dramatic origin that earned it a spot as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal.
The lake is substantial, measuring approximately 2 km long by 1 km wide. You can feel the sheer scale of the caldera when you stand on the rim looking down.
Planning Your Descent: Essential Access Tips
Access to this pristine nature reserve is carefully managed to protect its environment, especially during peak season.
- Summer Access (Mid-June to End of September): During these months, the only way to reach the lake level is via a shuttle bus running between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Tickets cost about €5 per person.
- Off-Season Access (My Preferred Time!): I visited in October, which meant I could drive my private vehicle right up to the second viewpoint and park there.
The Hike Down: Worth Every Step
If you decide to hike down—and I highly recommend it—prepare for an adventure! The path is rugged and rewarding:
- The Descent: It’s quite narrow, often only wide enough for one person, so be courteous and step aside for hikers coming up.
- The Challenge: Don’t be surprised if you encounter a ladder. It’s a real hike, not a paved walk.
- Time Commitment: Expect the descent to take around 20 minutes. The return journey? Budget double that time—you’ll be thankful for the shade on the way back up!
I spent about an hour and a half total, completing a rewarding quarter-loop around the lake’s edge before making the climb back up. The views are unparalleled, offering a perspective of the island you simply can’t get from the lookout.
