While the warmth of a Portuguese summer offers a riot of color, finding local blooms in the depths of winter can be a delightful challenge. Yet, there is one stunning exception that demands attention, currently standing as a vibrant centerpiece right in front of the Golden Mermaid Villa.
Look closely at the nativity scene (presépio) outside the nearby Ribeirinha Church, and you’ll spot a fiery flash of red: the magnificent Aloe Arborescens.
The Christmas Aloe
Known locally in Portugal as Aloé-de-Natal (Christmas Aloe) or Babosa Candelabro (Candelabra Aloe), the Aloe arborescens is a popular, hardy succulent perfectly suited to our Azorean coastal climate. Unlike many plants that go dormant, this aloe erupts in spectacular, branched, torch-like flowers during the colder months, providing a much-needed splash of color when little else is in bloom.
-
A Hardy Coastal Resident: It’s a resilient plant that has become naturalized across the coast, forming impressive hedges and thriving in sunny spots.
-
The Winter Bloom: Its common name, “Christmas Aloe,” refers to its reliable winter flowering period, making it a natural fit for holiday decorations.
A Star in the Azorean Presépio
The Aloe arborescens is more than just a beautiful winter flower—it is a beloved, living component of the holiday culture here.

You will find it starring in the intricate nativity scenes (presépios) that grace every city and village across the Azores. These nativity displays are wonderful local creations, trying to recreate the birth of Christ using the bounty of the islands: local wood, volcanic rocks, and native plants.
The Christmas Aloe is a favorite choice because of its incredible resilience. Cuttings can be pulled directly from the ground and used in the presépio for many weeks without soil, remaining green and vibrant throughout the holiday season. When night falls, these scenes, often beautifully lit, truly come to life, with the towering, torch-like aloes casting a festive shadow.
Ornamental and Medicinal (But Handle with Care!)
Beyond its ornamental use, Aloe arborescens is appreciated for its medicinal properties. Like Aloe vera, its gel is utilized for skin care and internal health purposes.

See the Aloe for Yourself!
When you stay at the Golden Mermaid Villa, take a moment to walk over to the Ribeirinha Church. The striking red blooms of the Christmas Aloe, standing sentinel in the nativity scene, offer a beautiful, authentic glimpse into the unique way the Azores celebrates the winter season.
