June in the Sao Miguel is a magical time. With the weather warming up, the island truly earns its nickname “the Green Island,” as it explodes with color from countless blooming flowers, including the iconic hydrangeas that surround my villa.

However, with all that beauty comes a hidden challenge: pollen. After 25 years without any allergies, my first June here was a rude awakening. My eyes became red and itchy, and I had a constant runny nose.

Fortunately, this year hasn’t been as bad for me. But if you’re planning a visit to the Azores in early summer, it’s wise to be prepared. Do yourself a favor and pack some allergy eye drops—they might just save you from the beauty of the island’s blooms.
