Third week of July, I had the pleasure of attending a delightful local event: the Hot Bread & Tea by Moonlight Festival in the town of Maia. It was a wonderful celebration that brought the community together for a night of food, music, and fun.

The festival featured a variety of entertainers and several bands, creating a festive and lively atmosphere. Hundreds of people gathered, all waiting for the main event: the free bread. We stood in line for about an hour for what turned out to be a simple, cold bun, but it was well worth the wait.

The magic of the night wasn’t just in the bread itself, but in the delicious and generous array of condiments. The simple bun became a delicious treat when topped with a variety of cheeses, peanut butter, jelly, and butter. It’s a testament to how the simplest things can be truly special in good company.

Adding to the evening’s charm was one of the main bands, which performed a set of American songs. It was a pleasant surprise to hear some familiar tunes and a fun way to connect with the entertainment.

This festival is a perfect example of the unique, community-focused events that make the Azores so special. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience local traditions and enjoy a taste of authentic island life.
