Trail PR 04 SMI Map

Sete Cidades isn’t just the most photographed spot on São Miguel—it’s a vast volcanic landscape begging to be explored on foot. While most tourists simply stop at the main viewpoint, we have two circular hiking recommendations that take you off the beaten path and deep into the crater’s magnificent heart.

Instead of tackling the long, linear trails that require extensive backtracking or tricky logistics, here are two contrasting loops that we love: one for the stunning views, and one for the true thrill-seeker.

Hike 1: The Iconic Views of Mata do Canário (PR 04 SMI)

This short, sweet, and incredibly rewarding loop is a must-do for any visitor. It offers the classic Sete Cidades experience without demanding an entire day.

  • Vibe: Panoramic views and hidden forests.

  • Time: Approximately 1 hour (Fast and rewarding!).

  • The Trail:

Lagoa do Canário: Start by trekking into a beautifully secluded wooden area to discover the petite and picturesque Lagoa do Canário. This hidden gem is often missed by travelers sticking to the main roads.

The Ridge Walk: The real magic begins when the trail opens up onto a breathtaking volcanic ridge. This segment provides a series of unbeatable, high-altitude views over the caldeira.

The Hidden Perspective: From this vantage point, you will clearly see the contrast between the twin lakes—the famous Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake)—along with the smaller, crystal-clear Lagoa de Santiago. This is the elevated perspective that many bus tours simply drive past.

Hike 2: The Thrill-Seeker’s Loop around Lagoa Verde

Route only going half way around Lagoa Verde

Looking for a proper challenge? Forget the easy, official path. We found a truly adventurous route that circles the entire Lagoa Verde. This is our most difficult recommended trail on the island.

  • Vibe: A challenging, “bushwhacking” jungle adventure.

  • Time: Varies greatly—allow at least 2 hours for this technical loop.

  • The Challenge: While the official route only covers half the perimeter, the unofficial trail wraps all the way around, taking you up and down the steep, dense crater walls.

Many down trees you must climb over

Adventure Obstacles: Be prepared for a raw, natural experience! You will find yourself using steep wooden steps in some sections, climbing over fallen trees in others, and, most thrillingly, crossing makeshift log bridges over gaps, relying on a hand-rope for balance.

  • The Takeaway: This hike is exhilarating! If you enjoy a physical challenge and feeling like a character in an adventure movie, this difficult loop will certainly keep you young at heart and deliver an unforgettable story.
