This summer, the Municipality of Ponta Delgada launched its fantastic Summer Night Program, filling the evenings with live music, dance, and cultural events. It’s a wonderful initiative that invites both locals and visitors to experience the vibrant arts scene of the island.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a special event celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the São Miguel Folk Dancing Group. It was a night filled with incredible energy and tradition. The event started a little earlier than the usual 10 PM, kicking off at 9 PM, which was perfect for getting a great spot to enjoy the show.
I was absolutely captivated by the folk dancing. Azorean folk dancing, or folclore, is a deeply rooted part of the islands’ identity. It’s more than just a performance; it’s a living tradition that tells stories of the people’s history, daily life, and emotional experiences. The dances are known for their lively and joyful spirit, often featuring intricate footwork and graceful partner movements. The costumes are also a key part of the show, with vibrant colors, embroidery, and traditional elements that are specific to different regions of the Azores.

The celebration wasn’t just about one group; it was a showcase of talent from across the island. Several other folk dancing troupes from different towns also performed, each with their own unique style and flair. We were also treated to performances by a few folk music groups, whose melodic tunes, played on traditional instruments like the viola da terra (a unique Azorean guitar), provided the perfect soundtrack for the evening.

While I couldn’t stay until the very end, which likely wrapped up around midnight, the part of the show I saw was truly memorable. It was a beautiful reminder of the rich cultural heritage of São Miguel and a perfect way to spend a warm summer evening.
