Monday, June 9th is a special day across the entire archipelago—it’s Azores Day, or Dia da Região Autónoma dos Açores.
Celebrated on all nine Azorean islands, this public holiday holds a unique place on the calendar. Falling right after Pentecost Sunday and just before Portugal Day, it often creates a welcome long weekend for many, allowing everyone to enjoy two days off work in the middle of the week.
It’s a day to honor the unique culture, history, and autonomy of the Azores, celebrating the island’s own identity as part of the broader Portuguese nation.
