A Holiday in the Middle: Celebrating Azores Day

Monday, June 9th is a special day across the entire archipelago—it’s Azores Day, or Dia da Região Autónoma dos Açores.

Celebrated on all nine Azorean islands, this public holiday holds a unique place on the calendar. Falling right after Pentecost Sunday and just before Portugal Day, it often creates a welcome long weekend for many, allowing everyone to enjoy two days off work in the middle of the week.

It’s a day to honor the unique culture, history, and autonomy of the Azores, celebrating the island’s own identity as part of the broader Portuguese nation.

Anthony “Tiger” Liu is an American expat and the operator of Golden Mermaid Villa and Longevity Habit retreat, where he shares a passion for the vibrant culture and nourishing lifestyle of São Miguel.
