The Secret Bubbling Water of São Miguel

The sun beat down as I pedaled my e-bike for a grueling hour and forty-five minutes from the Golden Mermaid Villa. My quest? A simple drink of water. But this wasn’t just any water—it was the hidden Lombadas natural sparkling water, bubbling right from the earth.

I had to ride on broken cobble stone road up a volcano, then get my feet wet has I had to cross a flooded road, the bolder across a stream them bushwhack across heavy vegetation to get to an old ruin, As I approached the ruin, I discovered a algee infested pond at the base of a old building.  Jetting out of one old wall was a pipe of flowing water.  I was greeted by its tranquil sound. The water, crisp and cool, was the perfect reward for my long journey. Every sip was a burst of effervescence, a natural fizz that invigorated me in a way no store-bought sparkling water ever could. It was more than just a drink; it was an experience.

What many people don’t realize is that the abandoned building was once a water bottling factory. Years ago, it thrived, harnessing the unique, naturally carbonated water from Lagoa do Fogo, or the Lake of Fire. The spring’s volcanic origins cause the water to be naturally effervescent, a geological wonder that gives Lombadas its signature sparkle.

Sadly, a competitor bought out the factory and shut it down, leaving the building to fall into disrepair. However, the fountain remains, a testament to its vibrant past and a constant source of this incredible natural resource.

This hidden gem, with its lush surroundings and the soothing sound of the fountain, created a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This trip wasn’t just about quenching my thirst; it was about the journey, the discovery, and the simple pleasure of finding something truly special.

If you ever find yourself on the island of São Miguel, I highly recommend making the pilgrimage to this natural wonder. The ride is worth it, and the water is an experience you won’t soon forget.
